Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, someone watched Star Wars too much and created this badass hovercraft bike. Unfortunately for all the Luke Skywalker wannabes out there, this bike is not a toy, and unless you’re doing hardcore social work in the the desert or wilderness, you might never get the chance to ride it at all.
When DeRoche, founder of Aeroflex, first thought of creating the hovercraft bike, he wasn’t daydreaming about the Return of the Jedi. Instead he was devising a way to get through difficult terrain such as those in the Australian outback or East Africa for the use of border control, search and rescue, and transport of agriculture. Though some of us may dream of taking one of these to the grocery store, DeRoche intends to open the hover bike sales only to government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other humanitarian efforts.
Powered by a rotary engine, the Aeroflex Hovercraft Bike uses ducted fans instead of exposed rotors to keep dust from flying all over the place, allowing it to sail across sand and swamp without the rider looking too ruffled. It can fly at altitudes between 5 and 15 feet and can carry up to 800 lbs of cargo. Retail price per bike is expected to be between $50,000 and $100,000.
