If you find yourself in Europe and looking for a fun, sunny, and historic destination, then Hvar Island is definitely the right place for you. Hvar Island is an island in the Adriatic, which boasts to have the oldest organized tourism in all of Europe due to its healthy climate and long hours of sunshine.
Today, Hvar Island is home to some of the most high quality accommodations. Its recent hotel accolades are often included in Fodor’s Top 100 and Sunday Times’ Best 100 Hotels in Europe. The villas on this island are also often featured in some of the world’s best interior design magazines.
This island lies off the Dalmatian coast in the Adriatic Sea. The entire island is about 68km long and is composed of a high east-west ridge of Mesozoic limestone and dolomite. The island, unusual as it is, has a large fertile coastal plain and fresh water springs. The hillsides of the island are composed of pine forests, olive groves, lavender fields, vineyards, fruit orchards and agricultural fields.
The population of the island comes up to 11,103, which makes it the fourth most populated Croatian islands. The Hvar Island, because of its location in the center of the Adriatic sailing routes, is also an important base for trade up and down the Adriatic, throughout the wider Mediterranean and across to Italy.
The island is a typical karst landscape, meaning it has limited or no surface water despite adequate rainfall. The water collected during the rainfall disappears into crevices in the ground, making farming difficult in such areas. However, the water cisterns in the fields, dry-stone walls, and especially the terracing on the slopes are responsible for the continued success of agriculture on the island.
Hvar Island, with access to the Pakleni Islands offers you beaches, stunning sunsets, nature, privacy, and fine dining. If you want something exciting, you can join in activities such as scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, rock climbing, sailing, cycling and hiking.
