Going outdoors during winter might not be a good idea for some people. But if you’re the type who’s ready to wear a scarf and gloves, head out and skate at the world’s longest skating rink, the Rideau Canal Skateway. Remember, this only happens during winter.
The 7.8 kilometer skateway, which stretches from downtown Ottawa (next to the National Arts Center) south to Dow’s Lake Pavilion, hosts activities like Winterlude Triathlon, Annual Bed Race, pond hockey, skating (of course), and more. As soon as the waterway freezes, the fun starts right away. Vendors pop up selling food and warm drinks, while some let you rent skates in case you forget yours.
The skateway is open all day and night and is usually safe to skate from January to March, but it totally depends on the weather so better check-out the updates before heading.
Also, don’t forget to grab some Beaver Tails and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate!
