Although this article provides so much information about the portable garage. I really never had the first-hand experience with it but I have seen some that have been up for a few years. I am looking to protect my new car this winter and I want to know from someone who has used the portable garage (the one with zipper door in front) that how many days does it usually last?. I live in a place where it snows sometimes but I can take the care of keeping the snow off the roof
Hey Sara, I have had one for my car that lasted for about 10 years. I have had to replace the cover once as it was damaged due to UV rays from the sun! The portable shelter stood fine in some pretty strong winds, rain as well as snowfall until last year where it snowed consecutively for 8-9 days and me being on the bed due to sciatica was unable to push the snow off and it collapsed.
Anchoring and wiping away the snow are the most important parts otherwise it will get blown away or bent/ broke. If you can take care of these two your portable shelter can last for quite a long time.
I have had ShelterLogic shaped 12 X 12 for over 8 years. There are mainly two things that help with longevity. The first thing that is keeping it perfectly square, plumb, and straight and the second is getting the cover tight for which I used ratchet straps from middle and worked my way to the ends.
I live in the snow belt of New Hampshire. Here we get around 12 inches of heavy, wet snow every year. I am thinking to proceed with Palram as according to the review and images it looks solid – high quality. Will this garage shelter be okay for my region or should I hire someone and get a custom one built-in?
Mike, I think Plaram Vitoria can easily survive that amount of snowfall and even more. But just to be on the safe side make sure to push the snow off after each snowfall (If you do not want to do this task then also it’s fine as this carport is built to last).

I usually store my boat in my garage over the winter but this year my garage is already filled with other essential things. My long-term plan is to extend my garage so that it can fit the boat along with other things but it will take some time. In meanwhile, I am thinking to use one of the portable garages to store my boat. I want to know whether it will require any permit?. Also, whether the garage with one door at each end would be a better option than a fully exposed one?
Nearby my house, there is a guy who keeps his classic cars under portable garages on his front drive. It works well for him!. As it’s not a permanent structure and can be taken down, so I don’t think you will be needing any permit. If I were in your shoes, I would choose the one with a door at each end as it will provide much better protection.
