A Restaurant Made Out Of Cardboard in Taiwan

There is a restaurant in Taiwan where everything is made of cardboard. Everything, except (luckily) the food.

Plates, cups, tables, chairs, light fixtures, and even the walls are made entirely out of recyclable material in Carton King Creativity Park restaurant in Taichung City, Taiwan. This quirky concept was conceived by a former paper salesman Huang Fang-liang who wanted to make an environmental statement through his creative business. “It’s to say that after using something, you can use it again,” he said in an interview with Reuters.

Entering Carton King feels like going inside of a life-sized brown-colored Lego house. The design is modern and eclectic, and is created completely out of various types of packaging carton. Whenever anything breaks, it is simply taken away by a waiter to be recycled back into the architecture, so nothing ever has to be thrown away. Cardboard fixtures including cardboard sculptures are water and flame retardant and are tested for stability–even in front of the customers. The restaurant’s 100-kg chef gladly sits on one of the cardboard chairs, and even lets a waiter sit on his lap, to show doubtful diners that there’s really nothing to worry about.

Besides the restaurant, the park also has a garden of sculptures made of cardboard (including the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa), a mini cardboard zoo, and a cardboard gift shop.
